That number means more to me than I probably realise right now. Having spent the day with my partner of two and a half years celebrating the news that the Irish Constitutional Convention has recommended marriage equality by an overwhelming 79%, I remember the feeling I had that very moment that Panti Bliss (Ireland’s premier drag entertainer) broke the news to the crowd waiting in the bar with baited breath. Joy. Hope. A feeling that we are on the edge of something incredible and momentous. Something so big that we can’t yet comprehend it. I laughed, cheered and even cried. Why? Well, let me tell you.

WP8 And Microsoft is silly (again)

So, with the announcement yesterday of Microsoft’s brand new Windows Phone 8, Microsoft have very effectively shot itself in the foot… again. They’ve announced WP8, but it won’t be out until Windows 8 is released. Oh, and current Windows Phone 7 devices won’t support WP8. Dear Microsoft, again you’re doing it wrong.

I know why they’re doing it and it makes sense today, but it makes no sense when you actually try and think like a consumer. Microsoft have released a platform and manufacturers have released phones that will be obsolete in a matter of months. WHY DID THEY NOT THINK THIS THROUGH?? Why, when they were making WP7, did they not stop and say “Hmm, you know, maybe we’d better actually wait until we have a platform and devices that have a life of more than a matter of months before we release this”.

So here’s a question: Why would I buy a Windows Phone 7 phone now?

Now, the comparison with Apple can be made: “But the iPhone 4 doesn’t support Siri!”

Right, but a) The iPhone 4 was released in 2010 and b) iOS 6 will mostly run on the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S.

Apple didn’t turn around last week and announce a new platform, that will not be released until the fall that will not support any of the current devices that they have out.

There’s your difference.

Seriously Microsoft, on Tuesday I was recommending that one of my colleagues get a Windows Phone 7 phone, probably a Nokia Lumia. Now, honestly, why would I? Back to the iPhone 4S, at least I know that that will get updates for the next 2 years.

Stupid stupid stupid.

[Edit: The appropriate emotion is disappointment. I had a potential user who I thought might be perfect for a Windows Phone. But now she’s going to get an iPhone]
